I Challenge You: Seriously
May 17, 2008

Is it really so hard to be a nice person? For some reason I have been running into or having to deal with not so nice people. The one thing I told myself when I was pregnant was that I would teach my son manners, politeness, and not to see himself as higher than anyone else (along with teaching him so many other things).
I have always been an overly friendly person who really cares about how the Wal-Mart checkers day is going. And most people I have come to realize don't even take the time to ask. When I worked at McDonald's (in high school) on of my biggest pet peeves was saying "how are you today" in my way too good of a mood for that early in the morning voice to be answered by not even so much as a hello or the person even looking at me except to give me their money. They are lucky no one spits in their food (which I never did but could have)!
Even when I was pregnant people would slam doors in my face instead of opening them for me and even now while lugging around a stroller its very rare that someone will open a door for me.
So I challenge you to be aware of this and do something about it every day for the next week and see what kind of response you get. Give a co worker a compliment and mean it, go out of your way to help somebody who needs it, ask everyone who helps you at a store how their day is going before they have a chance to ask you, bring a co worker coffee and put it on their desk before they get there (and don't tell them it was you). I have always wanted to go to Sonic and buy just a Route 44 soda and give them a $20 and tell them to keep the change.
Just try to make someones day a little better without any thought of what it will do for you. In the end you will like yourself better and if a parent will be showing your kid good ways to treat other people. Who knows what doing this will mean to someone. It may mean a lot more than you know......
